Based in Milton-Keynes, UK, Black Bee Studios is the pseudonym of Becci Salmon; a Design Lead in advertising by day, moonlighting as a linocut printmaker over evenings and weekends.
Her latest piece, titled You & Me, was a challenging work for her to produce, or as she describes; “something that really pushed me”. For starters, it’s the largest piece Becci has created to date, and is the only print she has managed to hand-burnish on heavy stock. After testing the print on her “trusty and go-to” Lotka paper, she decided to try 220gsm smooth paper. After a lot of effort with her metal spoon, it worked!
Technicalities aside, You & Me is also a slight shift in subject for Becci, whose prints almost always feature her signature ‘bone hands’ interacting with the subject, as well as taking inspiration from song lyrics. Yes, there are still hands in the piece, but the main focus here is blackletter typography. “The idea was that the letters were almost being projected over the hands, which is why the letterforms fit the curvature of the hands,” concludes Becci.
