Boris Rijksen | Human Being, Being Human

posted by POP Members July 17, 2025

Two and a half years ago, designer and printmaker Boris Rijksen created Human Being, Being Human, a type animation based on his feelings about the happenings in the world at the time. “Unfortunately, it feels even more relevant now,” says the artist, thus he decided to turn the work into a screen printed diptych. Human Being, Being Human is now available as single or diptych, with 75% of all proceeds going to Plant an Olive Tree Foundation and The Ukrainian Red Cross Society. The print measures 297 x 420 mm (A3) and is screen printed on off-white 320gsm eco, acid free paper in an edition of 30.

Typography has always been a passion for Boris, and he recollects it being part of his life even as a child; “My mother is a graphic designer and she had all kinds of Letraset sheets and other cool stuff to play with”. Ever since, letters and logos have never left his field of interest. Today, Boris’ practice focuses on branding and screen printing. He tells us; “I’ve many years of experience in design, advertising and branding but lately I felt the urge to experiment more, work more with my hands and combine art with design.” Currently, he is using screen print to explore his own personal brand, which led to the creation of BRS (Boris Rijksen Studio). Boris describes this as; “The ultimate side-project in which I can explore what the medium can do and make things that I have always wanted to make but clients never had the courage to go for.”

This practice involves the creation of typographic works, which Boris forms as modular pieces that make space for the buyer or viewer to play with. This allow for the viewer to change the pieces meaning or create a different composition which may be more suitable for the space where it’s going to hang. “I’ve always been inspired by poetry but I’m not a great writer. So I’m trying to give it my twist and make visual poetry,” says Boris.

Boris concludes; “We are all human beings but some powerful ones don’t act like they are human. And take away chances for humans to be.”
