Out of Context Collage

posted by People of Print Features February 3, 2026

Out of Context Collage is a personal digital collage project by Ana Teixeira that explores how humour and meaning can emerge when familiar elements are placed just slightly out of place. Built from ordinary, recognisable moments and images, the work twists everyday reality into something playful, surreal, and quietly unsettling.

At the core of the project is a simple idea: take what we already know and reframe it. Teixeira works with photographic fragments that feel banal or routine, then recomposes them in unexpected ways. Through shifts in scale, contrast, and context, these familiar elements become the starting point for new visual narratives. The resulting collages feel light and humorous at first glance, but they resist fixed interpretation. There is no single message to decode. Instead, meaning is fluid, shaped by the viewer’s own experiences, associations, and sense of irony.

The project is intentionally open-ended. By avoiding explicit storytelling, Teixeira allows each image to function as a prompt rather than a conclusion. A scene that feels absurd to one person may feel poetic or unsettling to another. This ambiguity is central to the work, inviting curiosity and imagination rather than explanation. Humour plays a key role here, not as punchline but as a subtle tension between what is expected and what is shown.

Out of Context Collage is developed digitally using Photoshop, where Teixeira focuses on composition and balance as much as the source imagery itself. Collage, for her, is a way of building new realities from fragments of the old. By layering images and disrupting their original meaning, she challenges the logic of everyday scenes and turns them into visual metaphors. The process becomes one of reinterpretation rather than invention, proving how easily context can shift perception.

While the work originates in the digital space, the collages are also available as physical print editions. Transferring them into print adds another layer to the project, grounding these surreal compositions in a tangible format and reinforcing the relationship between image, material, and viewer.

Ultimately, Out of Context Collage is about seeing the familiar differently. By gently distorting everyday imagery, Ana Teixeira transforms the ordinary into something unexpected, leaving space for humour, reflection, and personal meaning to coexist.
