Bold, Colourful and Made to Move: Gus Scott in the Hahnemühle Fine Art Showcase

posted by People of Print Features October 13, 2026

Frome-based illustrator and animator Gus Scott makes work built from block colour, shape and line — bold, playful characters full of movement. His work is part of People of Print’s open call exhibition in partnership with Hahnemühle, opening at Department Store & Co in Derby on 15 October 2026.

Gus Scott started his illustration career in-house at Dorling Kindersley before going freelance eleven years ago. Since then he has worked across children’s publishing, editorial, packaging, branding and global healthcare campaigns, picking up clients including Disney, The FA, the Financial Times, AstraZeneca, The Guardian, easyJet and HP Ink along the way. The range is wide, but the visual language stays consistent: bold, colourful, character-driven work that uses flat colour and clean line to generate movement and warmth.

Prints have always been part of that practice, sold mainly at markets and fairs rather than through heavy online promotion. He is also part of 13am Studio, a collaborative project working to represent an artist from every country on earth — his Drinking Buddies print is part of their webshop.

German Etching is his Hahnemühle paper of choice, and the reasoning is specific to how his work is made. Graphic illustration built from flat colour can flatten on the wrong surface; on German Etching, the texture does something different. “I love the texture the paper gives the ink,” he says, “and the way the colours pop on the paper, and the depth that the texture gives my work, which is often graphic and bold and has lots of flat colour.” The response from buyers backs that up — prints that looked one way on screen arrive with a physical presence that surprises people. “I’ve had messages from people who have bought prints from me who are really amazed when the work arrives.”

Scott will follow the opening from Frome.
