What could me more fitting for a book celebrating collectors edition graphic design than a limited edition, hand drawn artist series of its own. This was always author Stuart Tolleys intention, when he started work on Collectors Edition: Innovative Packaging and Graphics a few years ago and was published by Thames and Hudson this August. Contributors were always asking me if a collectors edition of my book was being released and it seemed like the perfect way to complete the project.
The idea of a Collectors Edition artist cover bomb’ series came late in development, but this week saw the release of an edition of 9 very special hand painted, unique collectible artworks created by some of the worlds leading musicians, artists and designers. The list of contributors is impressive, including Paul McCartney, Nick Cave, Stanley Donwood, Jessica Hische, Wayne Coyne, The Designers Republic, Alec Soth, Peter Gabriel and Oliver Jeffers.
Each invited artist was given the same loose brief to create an original artwork directly onto the cover of the Collectors Edition book, that in some way reflects your example featured inside the book. All resulting artworks are unique to the project and showcase a range of styles and media from paint, pen and ink, vinyl through to wax skull and a soap foetus.
Jessica Hische hand painted a beautiful typographic CE that reflects her Penguin Drop Cap series which was also decorated with a variety of coloured pencil flourishes. Oliver Jeffers mirrored a detail from the cover of his monograph ‘Neither Here Nor There using emulsion paint and pen drawn mathematical equation, while Nick Cave chose to redraw the cover of his latest album Push The Sky Away in pen to create a demure illustration of his wife, who appears naked in a photo on the original album cover. His cover was also date stamped in a style that reflects his lyric notebooks.
Each of these very special, unique hand created artworks are being sold at auction until Dec 12th to help raise funds for The Alzheimers Society in memory of Stuarts Nan, who died after suffering dementia for fifteen years. You can bid for them here.
