Zines of the Zone

The zine phenomenon has become an ever-expanding trend of the last decade, with more and more people embracing the DIY culture of self-publishing. Zines of the zone is a mobile library and travelling exhibition dedicated to self published zines, photo books, and fanzines – pretty much ‘any DIY printed matter related to photography’.

Because the majority of zines are minimally produced, sought after and within an affordable price range, they tend to sell out quickly, with this in mind their idea was born. Through making their collection available to the public they bypass these barriers, allowing people to access the zines, even through they are no longer available to buy.

ZOZ

In a relatively new venture, started in January 2014, they have been travelling across Europe in their van- and in the space of 6 months they have organised 70 events in 30 different countries.

Through exhibiting their collection in different spaces (such as bars, galleries, squats and public spaces), meeting with local publishing houses, organising pop up event they revitalize the traditional library mode of distribution. They believe that Zines of the Zone

‘by-passes the photographic institutional and editorial circuits and does not only offer pictures to look at, but it also presents the book as a media in itself, as a means of exploration’.

By emphasizing the physicality of the zine as a holdable and readable object, breaking away from the digitally orientated social media platforms.

Their collection is open and they welcome new submissions as long as it fits their criteria, and their next exhibition is from the 13th – 15th march at La Semencerie, Strasbourg.
