Kirsty Buckley is a designer, maker and paper engineer, based in Cheshire. She currently works in a studio on projects for one of the UK’s top veterinary brands and various retail clients. Her independent practice focuses on the ways that paper can be used alongside print to combine the past with the present, producing a more playful visual style.
In a recent project, old car manuals found in a local antique shop were revitalised and brought back to life by turning them into interactive pop-up books. Kirsty combined different prints with bright colours to add some more interest to the pop-ups and make the technical drawings come to life. When making pop-ups there were considerations that needed to be taken, such as how they would move and the way that the prints would work together. She saw this as an opportunity to further explore and experiment.
As a designer, Kirsty also sees print as the ideal way to show some of her other passions, which she believes if made in a digital format would lose their charm and personality. By taking more care on the little details and getting them perfect, Kirsty can add more sentimentality to her designs.
