Dave Lefner: 1946 Ford Woodie Linocut Print

Dave Lefner is a Los Angeles-based artist who works almost exclusively in the medium of reduction linocut. His colourful and retro art reflects the sunny optimism of mid 20th Century Americana. In recent years, he has exhibited at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) and Le Musée de l’imprimerie de Nantes, France. His work is also in the Permanent Collection of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

For his first gallery exhibition of 2020, at Sue Greenwood Fine Art in Laguna Beach, CA, Dave wanted to create a large, 12-colour diptych of a 1946 Ford Woodie to transport one “into a relaxing daydream at the beach, with the warmth of the sun on your face, matched with the cool, ocean breeze on your skin”.

The creation of the ambitious print was a detailed, labour-intensive reduction process, with the initial drawing going down on the blocks almost a month before the final prints (an edition of 6) were completed. The print measures 28 x 65 inches, and was created using Cranfield Traditional Relief Inks (oil-based) and Rives BFK Heavyweight paper.
