Nicole Rose is due to launch 3 new limited edition prints at The Other Art Fair, 17-20 March, at Truman Brewery London. As an artist and designer, Nicole’s work explores the emotional response to the natural world around her. Alongside her abstract landscape oil paintings, she creates complementary prints that are at once a reflection of the original painting, and a new perspective on it. Focusing on a photographed section of a finished painting, Nicole works in Photoshop to reimagine and rebalance, creating a run of limited-edition giclée prints that are both a part of the original works, and a fresh response to the landscape in their own right.
Nicole’s current selection of prints are derived from paintings created during the past year, following visits to nature reserves where she recorded sights and sounds, colours, and routes taken to remember and work from in her studio.
The inspiration for this new series, which includes 3 pieces (Osmosis, Amorphous, and Resonance), comes from paintings inspired by the places Nicole visits when walking with her dog. She also describes; “I’m getting inspiration from my previous prints, and as my print are being collected more, I’m building a portfolio of pieces that work really well when shown as a set, so that collectors can grow their collection.”
The process for the series began with a collection of landscape paintings. Nicole paints in oils, which is where she starts to layer and blend different shapes of colour, recreating the feeling of places where she has walked. “I would describe my paintings as abstract and ethereal landscapes that sit in the space between reality and my daydreams,” says the artist. Nicole then takes photos of various sections of her paintings, bringing them into Photoshop, and reworking the images to create digital pieces. She can spend hours on digital images, balancing out the colours and levels, blurring and blending, until she is happy with the outcome. Then the process starts again, and quite often she will refer back to the digital prints when she starts a new painting. Nicole describes; “Some of my paintings can look like they are airbrushed or digitised as I try to recreate the blurring tools of photoshop onto canvas”.
Nicole has curated a wall of nine of her framed prints for The Other Art Fair, resulting in a really dynamic showcase. When asked why she loves exhibiting at the fair, Nicole tells us it’s all about “making connections with other artists”, and “feeling like part of a family that is run by a really well oiled machine”.
She is currently working on a collaboration with another artist (someone she met through The Other Art Fair), which will hopefully result in a joint exhibition later this year. Nicole is a regular exhibitor at The Other Art Fair in London and the Contemporary Art Fair and is shortlisted for the Boodle Hatfield Print Prize 2022, for her print Coalescence which was exhibited at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in November 2021.
