Where Creativity Breathes a Little Slower: Refueled Issue No. 19 Goes to Woodstock

Independent publication Refueled returns with Issue No. 19, “Woodstock”: a photographic portrait of the Upstate New York mountain town and its enduring creative spirit, captured entirely on film. Publisher Chris Brown calls it a form of image therapy.

Chris Brown’s introduction to Woodstock came through Joni Mitchell. Not from attending the festival — Mitchell never did either. Her manager David Geffen kept her in New York for a Dick Cavett Show appearance the following Monday, and the crowds would have made getting back in time impossible. Instead, she imagined Woodstock from a distance, and transformed it into something mythic: a spiritual expression of what that moment represented rather than a document of what happened. That idea has stayed with Brown ever since.

When longtime collaborator and photographer Steven Visneau moved to Woodstock a year ago, it felt like the right moment to explore the place for real. Brown wanted to look beyond the mythology and find what Woodstock is today: not a landmark frozen in counterculture history, but a living creative ecosystem that continues to evolve. The artists, musicians, makers, independent businesses and the connection to nature all felt very much in line with what Refueled has always been about.

The result is an issue Brown describes as image therapy. “There was a deliberate intention to create a sense of stillness and calm, allowing each photograph room to breathe rather than overwhelming the reader with information or visual noise,” he says. The warmth, grain and imperfections of film were central to that aim, lending the images a tactile, almost meditative quality. Visneau’s photographs are intimate and unhurried: weathered cabins, record stores, bookshops, cafés and galleries beneath towering maples and pines. They feel less like documentation and more like participation.

What holds the issue together is Brown’s observation that Woodstock balances nostalgia with reinvention. Its creative history is deeply rooted in the past, but the spirit that drew artists and musicians here generations ago is still present. You see it in the independent shops, the people making things by hand, and the new ideas forming alongside the old. For Brown, that kind of breathing room is what creativity needs: the space to observe, to think and to let things happen without pressure. Woodstock, he says, reminds you that inspiration doesn’t always come from moving faster or looking for something new. Sometimes it comes from paying closer attention to what is already around you.

Refueled, founded and creatively directed by Brown, is an independent publication exploring art, design, style, music, culture, travel and the people and places that give those categories their texture. Each issue is conceived as a visual journal, rooted in independent thinking and strong design, with the medium itself treated as part of the story.
