Recently, Edinburgh-based printmaker and linocut artist Rosanna Reade has been working on a collection of prints with an ocean theme. The centrepiece of this exciting new collection is an extra large reduction linocut print of a coral reef. The piece exemplifies her passion for storytelling, with each little fish included oozing with character.

“I love using flat, limited colours to create a stylised image, and I also love to add lots of tiny intricate details,” comments the printmaker. For example, in Coral Reef, there are little fish, crabs, and shells nestling in nooks of rocks and under seaweed. Normally Rosanna’s subject matter is earth-bound, with illustrations of rooms and interiors. “I’d been trying to find a composition for a coral reef print for some time,” says Rosanna. Thus, this print was slightly new territory for the printmaker, but the results are nevertheless mesmerising.

Coral Reef measures 40x60cm, and is printed on Somerset Satin in 4 layers. The first layer a pale grey, then blue, then vibrant pink (which became slightly more lilac with the blue undertones), and, finally, black.
