Astral Black :: Oscar Whale :: Jaisu ‘A Short Album’

Astral Black is a new London based record label founded by producer Jon Phonics. The exciting new label is also producing some crazy dope artwork with up and coming-designer / LCC graduate Oscar Whale stepping up as the labels in house visual artist. Jon has given Oscar (a freelancer’s dream brief) the opportunity to have conceptual freedom concerning the art direction for the label’s tape series.

Oscar explained “We grew up together and have always shared a strong mutual interest in music and album artwork. While Jon made music, I’d troll through his records and pull out all the good looking records for inspiration and reference in my own work. For the tape series he just gave me the music, told me to vibe with it and do what I wanted with the sleeves”

Most recently developing the Artwork for Astral Black’s 2nd release – “A Short Album” by Scottish producer Jaisu. (Available through pre order from Bleep, with the London launch @ Alibi on the 19th Sept.) The limited run of 100 cassettes feature Oscar’s distinctive artwork, sporting a 3 layer screen print that forms trippy offset psychedelic visuals with type in electric colour combinations. With the pattern inspired and developed from magnifying and manipulating textures formed by crystals and stones, Oscar maintains his flare for observing and identifying with pattern in print.
