Chennai-based multidisciplinary graphic designer and art director Malavika Natesh builds a self-initiated zine from mixed media collage, typography and personal writing, creating a visual piece that carries meaning rather than just surface appeal.
The title is an intimate address. Letter to the World borrows from Emily Dickinson, but Malavika Natesh’s version is enclosed in parentheses: (My) letter, a reminder that what follows is particular before it becomes universal. The zine is a self-initiated editorial project in which design and writing are treated as inseparable, each shaping the other rather than one serving the other.

The visual energy of the piece draws from environmental stimuli, primarily music, and from the rhythms of type and colour used to build voice and emotion rather than decoration. Grainy textures and analogue aesthetics give the work a tactile quality as if it carries a physical presence beyond the screen. The process moves between analogue and digital: photographs, papers and physical materials are cut up and assembled into collages, scanned, then worked further through digital manipulation. Narrative intention comes first; the tools follow where the content leads.

“In a world where everything’s fast-paced,” Natesh says, “I was excited to create something that could make you stop for a moment and think.”
The writing and visual elements were developed in dialogue throughout, with text curated alongside layout rather than dropped in at the end. The result is a piece where meaning is carried through the whole surface of the work, through the choice of typeface as much as the words set in it, through the texture of a collaged image as much as what it depicts. Natesh describes her practice as creating visuals that connect and carry conceptual weight rather than stopping at aesthetic appeal, and this project is the fullest expression of that philosophy: a creative manifesto made visible.
