Designed by Francesco Canovaro, Zetafonts’ Creative Director, Bogart is one of the most-loved and successful typefaces from Italian type foundry Zetafonts. After an intense amount of development, the team have just announced an updated and extended version of this beloved family, now featuring a new range of condensed weights, as well as technical enhancements, updated kerning, and redesigned Greek letterforms.
Originally launched in 2020, Bogart is a tribute to the classic low-contrast, old-style, fat faces, capturing the bold essence, playful shapes, and exuberant swash characters of Cooper, Bookman. Bogart is a vibrant homage to the muddy, goopy shapes that found their pop culture iconic status thanks to rub-on transfers and phototypesetting systems in the 1960s and 1970s.
In researching these shapes, Francesco decided to also include the influence of another idiosyncratic American old-style typeface, Windsor. Inspired by its sloping shapes and quirky solutions, Francesco expanded the weight range of Bogart to include a selection of display light weights where the muddy shapes of the heavy weights distill into elegant teardrop terminals.
As part of this update Zetafonts have also introduced Bogart Arabic, designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini. This version extends the playful and rounded design of Bogart to the Maghribi script, beautifully complementing its Latin counterpart. Thanks to the expert help of calligrapher Aziz Bouyabrine, Bogart Arabic captures the elegance of Maghribi calligraphy and creates a striking counterpart to the Latin original. The wide range of weights from the sleek Thin to the bold Black and the variable version give Bogart Arabic extra versatility for editorial work, packaging, and logo design.
With the updated Bogart family and the introduction of Bogart Arabic, designers now have a better tool to evoke the many moods of vintage typography, from film noir aesthetics, to hippie aesthetics.
