Vietnamese boutique creative practice Fins Studio translates a poet’s emotional journey into a physical form through exposed Coptic binding, handwritten poems and illustrations drawn from real photographs, creating an intimate keepsake that is as much presence as publication.
The demoiselle crane is a quiet bird. A migratory species associated with grace, endurance and the experience of moving through transition, it gave Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Thiên Ngân the image around which her poetry collection turns. For Fins Studio, the challenge was to find a physical form that could hold that same emotional quality without reducing it.
The Silhouette of a Noble Crane began with reading, then conversation. The studio worked in close collaboration with the poet through extended sessions that shaped the collection’s four emotional phases into a cohesive physical narrative before any design decisions were made. Hand-stitched prototypes followed, refining the proportion, tactility and opening behaviour of the book until the object itself felt right. The exposed Coptic binding that anchors the final design was chosen deliberately: its visible structure expresses transparency and vulnerability, making the book’s own construction part of what it is saying about the poems inside.

Two further decisions deepen that intimacy. Selected poems appear in Nguyễn Thiên Ngân’s own handwriting, which carries, as the studio notes, “an intimacy that typography cannot replicate, turning each page into something personal and immediate.” And the visual elements throughout were developed from real photographs of the poet, translated into minimal black-ink illustrations that align with the quiet, introspective tone of the work without competing with it. The result is a book in which the poet’s physical presence is genuinely embedded, not represented.

Printed in an edition of 5,000 copies on carefully selected textured art paper, the book was conceived as a keepsake as much as a reading object: a physical extension of an emotional landscape, made to be held and returned to. The scale of the edition is itself a statement of ambition, that this kind of intimate, design-led poetry object can reach a broad audience without sacrificing the care that makes it meaningful.

Fins Studio is a boutique creative practice based in Vietnam, led by two independent creatives. The studio works hands-on across logos, books, packaging and illustration, approaching each project through sketches and conversation rather than trends.
