Gaia Stella is an illustrator and author living and working from Milan, Italy. She has authored and illustrated picture books and novelty books for Italian and international publishers, including hélium, La Joie de Lire, De La Martinière Jeunesse, Mondadori, Einaudi. Gaia has created editorial illustrations for clients such as The New York Times, Vogue Bambini and The Boston Globe.
Her colourful and geometric imagery is inspired by a variety, and sometimes unexpected, sources; architecture by Mies Van De Rohe, a chair designed by Gio Ponti, photos by René Maltête, illustrations by Vladimir Lebedev, short stories by Gianni Rodari, and the packaging of Asian food.
Gaia’s work is characterised by a clean aesthetic, bold designs, and original colour combinations. Her latest picture book, Bambini e Bambole (Children and Dolls) written by Gianni Rodari in 1964, was recently published by EL edizioni to mark the centennial anniversary of the birth of the children’s author. For the occasion the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco have organised the exhibition Italian Excellence: Illustrators for Gianni Rodari, inviting Gaia to the opening in San Francisco on December 2nd. The show will be up until February 2020 before it travels to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
Recently, Gaia also created the logo and signage for a children’s library in Shanghai, and continues to create illustrations for a variety of media, from two-dimensional to three-dimensional including paper, fabric and toys.
