New People of Print Member Mustard Ivy is an Essex based eco-friendly screen printing family business. Mustard Ivy is made up of Connie, a London College of Fashion tailoring graduate and her mother, Maria, a retired Deputy Head Teacher. Their passion for print design snowballed when Connie designed a range of bespoke suit linings for her final collection. Connie is a self-taught print designer who learnt from trial and error and numerous online tutorials. After graduating, she wanted to take her digital designs from screen to medium and after experimenting with digitally printed samples, she realised screen printing was the answer. They loved the way the ink felt and looked on fabric, something that digital printing could not replicate. Together, they took a course in screen printing and fell in love with the versatility and satisfaction it gave. They continued to work from home experimenting with printing on a range of textiles. Eventually, they outgrew the garden and kitchen sink and moved into a local art studio.
Together, they design, print and make bold and bright screen printed bags and accessories. Their designs are driven by nostalgia and have gradually evolved into more simplified, abstract forms such as balloon dogs, macaroni and spirographs. They specialise in screen printing on textiles, particularly faux leather, using eco-friendly water-based inks. They are influenced by bold, minimalist geometric designs that are brought to life with an abundance of colour and aspire to create goods that bring a flash fun and warmth with a distinctly contemporary look. Their design mantra is ‘never over design’. Keep the design simple so you can inject lots and lots of colour.
