ShyBrainsGetNowt is a London-based designer who traditionally juxtaposes warped and wonky Xerox photocopy art with the clean-cut world of 3D modelling and renders. However, for this self-initiated project, he has gone back to his roots as an industrial designer – seeking to smash 2D and 3D together again by forming the complex curves and contours of a race car from flat sheets of laser cut cardboard. The whole car sits on real skateboard axles and wheel bearings, meaning the wheels can be swapped out to change up the style.
Fast Resort draws inspiration from his teenage years spent playing Tony Hawk’s II on Playstation, listening to the soundtrack while skating to his friends house, and fitting a giant exhaust to his first car where he took the back seats out to make it ‘faster’. He married this with knowledge from his day job as a packaging designer, and produced the laser cut specimen you see today.
This small car is ShyBrainsGetNowt’s interpretation of the pinnacle of motor racing; mashing together aerodynamic cues and contours from some of the biggest teams and eras of the sport, and exaggerating the proportions to give the stylised finished silhouette.
The car was modelled in Blender before being sliced up into layers and re-drawn as flat shapes to cut with a laser cutter. The cardboard layers are held together with six lengths of threaded stainless steel rod, so there’s no gluing or adhesives – and everything sits on standard skateboard axles and wheel bearings, giving a smooth, silent ride when rolling.
The Fast Resort MK1 Race Car set is live on Kickstarter until April 14. There are no wheels included in the set, enabling you to customise your car with your own choice of 65mm diameter skateboard wheels.
