Britt Bowen, aka brittandmars, is a New England-based artist and printmaker. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art & Design/Art History and a Master’s degree in Arts Management/Museum Studies. During her last semester of undergrad, Britt took her first relief printmaking course and has been hooked ever since.
She primarily carves linoleum, and in recent years has focused on her Animal Battle series, which began in 2019. These dreamscape scenes include twin animals caught in a moment of action: whether that action is aggressive or playful is up to the viewer. Britt aims to capture frenetic little scenes that transport the viewer into another world with a range of flora, fauna, and celestial beings. “For me, this series is a study of balance, symmetry, relationships, and a celebration of nature,” says the printmaker.
Britt works from her small home studio, where she carves a few blocks a year and produces small editions. She uses a Blick 906 Etching Press (nicknamed Blue Baby) but often prints by hand as well. With the help of her friend, she has been experimenting with a range of 3D-printed ball-bearing barens. Her favorite baren, however, is a repurposed shoe form she found at a consignment shop. Her inks of choice include Speedball water-based and Caligo Safewash inks, which are usually black and printed on different papers. For her Animal Battles series, she prints on tan sketchbook paper.
In 2022, Britt began what is evolving into the Britt & Mars Print Co., named for her handsome but unhelpful cat, Mars. Looking to the future, she plans to expand her printmaking from paper to textiles, utilising upcycled fabrics. She hopes the next year will bring more local opportunities to showcase her work both in exhibitions, vending opportunities, and commissions.
