We All Look at the Same Sky is part of an ongoing series of both editioned silkscreen prints and originals by London-based artist Caroline Tomlinson. At the heart of the series is the exploration of the notion of ‘belonging’, and what it means to feel a part of something, or somewhere.
Caroline spent years travelling, looking for what she thought were adventures, but it was only when she paused and gave herself opportunity to reflect did she realise it was less about the adventures, and more a feeling of belonging she was seeking. She states; “This is a human desire we all share. Realising this is a universal want made me appreciate that we are no different in what we are seeking. No matter where we are in the world. We all need to pause to see things clearly. All our desires and dreams, a need to find our place in the world. I take a comfort in this want we all share.”
In this latest piece, Caroline has continued using the symbol of swallows, a re-occurring motif within the series. This tiny bird migrates thousands of miles each year chasing the Summer, travelling to and from the Northern hemisphere, mirroring the artist’s own personal experience. Travelling in a flock to reach warmer climates – the swallow is a symbol of love, loyalty and hope.
