Refueled magazine publisher/artist, Chris Brown, was recently honoured as Camp Wandawega’s first “Artist-in-Residence”. Wandawega, located in Wisconsin, is a popular camp getaway for the creative community and on the National Register of Historic Places.
“It was absolutely amazing roaming the trails of camp during the peak of Fall,” says Chris. “The colour palette is reason enough to visit. For someone who grew up at family/scout camps, Wandawega was the ideal location to gather inspiration and create.”
After sharing the stories of other artists, makers, and musicians over 15 years in the pages of Refueled, Chris felt it was the right time to concentrate more on his own art.
The piece created during the residency was inspired by his love for vintage, exploration, surf, and skate. As a child of the 60s and with close access to the Gulf shores of his home state of Texas, Chris was drawn to skateboarding and surfing. Skateboards began to attract everyday surfers who could use the boards when they weren’t in the water, and thus the term “sidewalk surfer” was coined.
Using “Surf” as a metaphor, he constructed a mixed media “sidewalk surfboard” inspired by the vintage aspect of Camp Wandawega’s aesthetic, cabins and history. The piece now hangs in the camp’s Sycamore House (also known as the Artist’s Cabin).
A companion book and short film titled SURF Camp Wandawega; An Artist Residency, photographed/filmed by Steven Visneau will be released early 2023.
