Dominic Edwards: Dataprint

posted by POP Members December 12, 2018

New to our People of Print programme is Dominic Edward, a half French and half English Graphic Design graduate from the University of Portsmouth. Dominic values the importance of storytelling in his work, most recently showcased in his latest book ‘Dataprint: Data Visualisation meets Printed Matter’ by printing directly with bicycle parts to tell a personal story rich in data and emotion.

Dominic was inspired by Information Designer Giorgia Lupi and her beautifully humanistic approach to the world of data, and legendary Dutch Graphic Designer Karel Martens, with his colourful and playful printed style. The book is an experiment into how data, which is often considered clinical and boring, can tell a story, have personality and look beautiful, all by using a simple method of printing.

Data was collected by Dominic in a few different ways. For example, by video camera attached to his bicycle, reflective writing and by using apps like Strava. This process of collecting data made him start to look and think differently about the environment. The experimental printing process consisted of applying ink directly onto the surface of various bicycle parts including pedals, chain-rings and chain-links. Using a small press, Dominic started making prints, with the help of UoP Printmaker Jordan Baines. New meaning began to appear in the impressions, with detail in each print telling a different story.

One of the seven data visualisations within the book portrays the hazards that frequently occur when cycling into University. Dominic not only hopes to show how data can be more than bar graphs and pie charts, he also intends to highlight key issues with urban cycling, to show where improvements can be made. Check out his work below!
