Jeanne Mutrel is a freelance graphic designer based in Paris, France. She has been working in the publishing industry for nearly 20 years, designing novel covers, lettering for comics, creating page layouts, and more. Alongside this, Jeanne also creates and prints silkscreen posters from her home studio.
She tells us; “In Paris, it’s pretty complicated (and expensive!) to get a working place of your own, so I use the family living room as a studio”. Her DIY studio is composed of a high legged table to which she has attached hinges for her screen frames. Underneath, Jeanne has installed a second-hand drawer cabinet which she uses to store paper, frames, and more. A wheeled cart (also second-hand) is used to store ink, and when she takes it out, it also completes her work surface.
Jeanne dries her frames in large storage boxes made of opaque fabric that lets enough air through, but not enough light. For exposure, a halogen spotlight is attached to a table with clamps, and for rinsing/cleaning, a garden hose (which has more pressure than a shower) is connected to the bathroom tap. And finally, for drying, she uses a line and clothespins. She comments; “Another bonus, with a home studio, you can keep your children busy during the vacations and introduce them to serigraphy!”
Pop culture forms the basis of the inspiration behind each of Jeanne’s prints. She says; “I like to mix references that resonate with each other (well, according me)”. Each print begins with visuals that are created on the computer so Jeanne has use of the grid, lettering, and more. She comments; “On screen, it’s very clean, very smooth, a bit cold. But what I really like are the little printing accidents, the slightly rough, slightly punk aspect that screen printing can have, which makes each print unique.”
Jeanne has also recently started experimenting with linocut printing, allowing her to further explore the “rough look”. She is looking forward to taking part in more designer markets soon, and having a real studio!
