Our Journey Together | A linocut Print Series by Emily Hancock.

Our Journey Together is a project created by Emily Hancock, a linocut printmaker based in West Yorkshire, UK. It celebrates the journey of a woman as she enters into Motherhood and celebrates the magic of the Earth with her daughter. The series comprises of 4 mini prints (all measuring 14.5cm x14.5cm), printed in Prussian Blue Cranfield Colours Safewash Ink. Each print is a small, limited edition of 10 and tells a different part of the story. They are all connected by a hand-finished colourful moon, with copper, a spritz of gold, and a different colour of acrylic paint.

Emily’s work often celebrates nature, adventure, and diversity. She enjoys exploring the human relationship with nature and the beauty of diverse people, cultures, and landscapes. Much of her inspiration comes from adventures she has been on with her backpack, particularly in South Asia. She states; “I hope to create art that brings about feelings of adventure and serenity and celebrates the cultural diversity of our planet and the relationship we have with nature.”

The journey in linocut begins with Under the Stars, which features a lady looking at the Moon, as she reflects on her life before her. Just Us then celebrates the Lady enjoying her pregnancy and reflecting on the moon and her new life ahead of her. The third print, Together, depicts the Lady with her young daughter, looking up at the moon and dreaming of the adventures that lie ahead of them. The final print in the series, Amongst the Fiery Mountains, again features the Lady with her daughter, but now older and enjoying an adventure together. They look out at volcanoes and the magical Blood Moon.

Each lino block was printed and left to dry, with the moon added as a later addition using a stencil and shimmery gold spritzing spray paint, and then copper and different colours of acrylic paint flicked on with a toothbrush. “I really enjoyed this part, as each moon varied considerably and it was a surprise each time to see how it would turn out,” says the printmaker.

Throughout the series, the Lady and her daughter wear headscarves, suggesting their adventure is not taking place in the West, but in a far-off land, ready for exploring. Emily tells us; “I hope that this highlights our relationship with the Earth, no matter where we are in the world. It is a celebration of Womanhood, Motherhood, Adventure and the Moon.”
