Rachel Hiemer is a self-taught artist based in Charlotte, NC. Here, she works out of her home studio creating linocut prints and digital illustrations that are inspired by themes of nature and sustainability. Rachel’s work is very textured and heavily detailed, mimicing nature and organic forms. This is then contrasted with sharp and structured lines reflecting the man-made environment so many of us live in.
“I try to create work that inspires the viewer to slow down and enjoy the natural world around them which can be very difficult in this fast-paced world we are living in. I believe that if people were more connected to nature, we would be doing more to protect it and be more mindful of how we treat out planet.”
The printmaker pulls a lot of inspiration from animals, her garden, local greenhouses, and farmer’s markets local to Charlotte. Originally from Wisconsin, which has a long and grey winter, Rachel was amazed by the year-round life that grows and how much of an emphasis is put on green spaces in Charlotte.
Rachel’s working process begins with creating sketches on her iPad using procreate. After a lot of trial and error with the composition, she then goes in with an ink brush to create the texture and final draft. Next, Rachel transfers her design to linoleum, carves, and prints everything by hand. She hopes to eventually add a press to her toolbelt, but for now loves the simple process of hand burnishing.
Looking to the future, Rachel aims to add more products with her designs, show in gallery spaces, and experiment with more mediums to push the boundaries of what is possible with her work.
