Dancing Hawks is the latest print release from Charlotte, NC-based linocut artist Rachel Hiemer. The design is inspired by Rachel’s love for hawks and the spiritual nature of this beautiful bird. “We had a hawk living in our yard throughout my pregnancy that sparked my interest and looked into the meaning of a hawk sighting,” says the printmaker. The hawk represents protection, clarity, change, and pursuing your dreams, which reflects a period of change in Rachel’s life with a baby on the way. She comments; “I knew I needed to work really hard to pursue my dreams of creating art full time. So seeing the hawk daily really reminded me each morning of what I was working towards. So this design has been in the works for quite some time as a nod to this friendly fellow.”
For this piece, Rachel wanted to challenge herself to work in a larger scale with a heavily detailed design, thus the final print is 16×20 inches. She worked hard to create lots of texture in the feathers with flowering vines to break up the design. Rachel used the acrylic medium transfer method to ensure a really precise image, as she was able to see the design as she carved.
Dancing Hawks was created on battleship gray linoleum and printed on lotka paper.
