Rahel Sodey’s artwork is a direct response to the Suffolk landscape where she lives. This recurring theme is one that she can’t seem to get away from, and is now deeply embedded in her work.
“Since a young child I have been fascinated by the flat lines in the fields and the changing colours and light of the landscape. I walk my whippet dog through the fields and take photographs of my surroundings to take back to my studio to work from.”
Rachel completed a degree in Fine Art Textiles, during which she began depicting the lines of the land through screen printing and abstract stitch. However, it was only when she starting teaching art that she experimented with different printing processes in order to demonstrate to her students. Rachel discovered that through intaglio printmaking she could create simple and abstract pieces. By simply deciding how much ink to wipe off or leave on the surface of the plate, the artist found she could create a sense of different movements and atmospheres. She now predominantly works on dry point cardboard; cutting and engraving lines into the plate to suggest the lines of the Suffolk landscape. Rachel describes; “I find this process highly addictive with a sense of surprise as I am never quite sure how a plate will print“. She has also taught herself how to print using carborundum on drypoint plates; this technique achieves a rich texture resulting in prints that become more expressive and unpredictable.
Having recently opened an Etsy shop to sell her prints, Rachel is now focusing on creating larger pieces to exhibit and sell. She concludes; “I have found that my printmaking is very reflective of the feelings I experience while walking through the landscape. It gives me time to think, breathe and escape“.
