Rayzam is Mazyar, a professional product design, and creative linocut artist. Working from Lyon, France, by day he creates digital interfaces, but outside of working hours focuses his time on carving lino.
“I discovered linocut totally randomly after being offered a starter kit for Christmas,” Mazyar tells us. Having loved drawing for as long as he can remember, carving lino came naturally, and he quickly fell in love with the process. Thus, he is mostly self taught. Mazyar comments; “It really gave me what I was missing in my job, as I am 95% of the time on my laptop. Creating something with my hands, carving, inking, pressing… It helped me connect the dots.”
Influences for his designs are fairly diverse, ranging from sci-fi books, comics, and rock band covers, to Asian and Persian traditional paintings and mushrooms. Mazyar describes; “It’s quite random. I try to create something a bit fantastic with some clunky details, and always a bit of humour. I don’t like when it’s too serious.”
His plans for the future? “I’m slowly expanding my activity to new projects and mediums.” Mazyar is looking forward to experimenting with fabric and making his own paper.
