Based in Brighton, Robin Ajder is an abstract artist who hand draws all of his work. Currently, Robin is building a catalogue of work for his website and exhibitions, as well as taking on commission projects.
Originally working in Project Management after completing a Business and Marketing undergraduate degree and a Marketing Masters degree, today Robin works as a Life Coach, specialising in helping creative people add clarity and structure to their lives so that they can actually “get stuff done”.
The main inspiration for Robin’s artwork is his own lived experience; “I battled mental health and drug addiction for 9 years, which was unsurprisingly a very dark period of my life. I’m now over 6 years clean and sober and I have an amazing life today. This transformation my life has undertaken is my main inspiration.” Major themes in his work related to this are connection, authenticity, passion, integrity, healing, and joy. Artistically, fellow POP member Zoe Anker is also a big inspiration; “I can’t explain why I love her work so much, but it’s very special. I’m also inspired by Mark Rothko, his work is so simple but so powerful.”
Robin’s working process takes one of two forms, the first being when he knows what he wants to create from the offset; “When this happens I’m quite systematic in the way I work the piece through to completion”. The second approach is when he doesn’t have a vision of what he is trying to create, so starts by experimenting with patterns and shapes, adding components to a blank canvas and gradually building up the work. Robin comments; “Something that I focus on is trying to achieve balance in my work, both in terms of colour and shapes. I never want a “blotchy” or uneven aesthetic, so from start to finish I have an eye on how each component affects the overall piece.”
Robin’s artworks are created using alcohol markers and cartridge paper. He tells us; “I feel like there is an expectation that as I progress as an artist I should change over to using paint, as this is a very classical and credible medium for art. For me personally, using alcohol markers feels great and allows me to achieve the type of colour saturation that I love.” Who knows what the future holds, but for now Robin intends to carry on using his beloved Copic Marker Pens.
Looking to the future, above all else Robin wants to create art that people want to hang in their homes and enjoy every day. “That’s what I find most motivating and exciting,” says the artist. He hopes to continue building his profile, and work with more fantastic artists in his Life Coaching capacity as he takes “huge fulfilment and pride” from this work. Robin is also currently prepping for his first solo show in Dundee in July.
