Author J. G Ballard’s speculative futures illustrate a dystopic world, psychologically and philosophically bleak, urbane and mechanised by technological development – a world that is scarily encroaching. Running from 14th October to 4th Jan 2015 at the Hayward Gallery, MIRRORCITY showcases recent artwork from 23 established and up and coming London based illustrators, painters, sculptors, and performance artists. The collection as a whole addresses the liminal space in-between the physical and the digital and between fiction and reality – exploring the effects of the digital revolution on our contemporary society and alluding to modern city life.
From the very beginning, upon entering the exhibition you receive a mock tabloid from an ‘alternative world’ produced by writer Tom McCarthy and the exhibition itself is fragmented and multifaceted – represented in its use of space. In an exploration of the digital age, consumer culture and our surveillance society, MIRRORCITY addresses and seeks to challenge the consequences of the digital revolution. Through depicting the artists differing reactions to consumerism, the internet and technological advancement and offering new perspectives of the digital world, some exhibits expel a Ballardian pessimism of modernity. It also seems that MIRRORCITY aims to leave you questioning what’s real and our experiences in a world where the boundaries between fiction and reality are becoming increasingly blurred.
