Bucharest-based illustrator and animator Andreea Jurj brings a cinematic sensibility to everyday scenes. Textured, emotionally layered work rooted in screen printing and oil painting, shaped equally by city pop aesthetics and the moving image. Her work is part of People of Print’s open call exhibition in partnership with Hahnemühle, opening at Department Store & Co in Derby on 15 October 2026.
Andreea Jurj has spent over twenty years working across illustration and animation, building a practice rooted in the textures and atmospheres of lived experience. Her subjects are the ones that resist easy description: the quality of light in a particular city, the mood of a meal remembered, the feeling of being somewhere and paying close attention. She describes her focus as “capturing the unique spirit of an environment, people and lifestyle, travel, food, memories and perception.”

Influenced by her background in screen printing and oil painting, Jurj works with colour and grain to build what she calls a cinematic quality. Her illustrations suggest a frame from something longer, a moment held still from a story that continues beyond the edges. “Playing with the juxtaposition of light and shadow,” she says, her work “conjures subtle emotions and moods while using colour and grain to create a deeply evocative atmosphere.” The emotional range is wide: from slight unease and tension to something warm and luminous, the images can sit at either end of that spectrum or move between them.
Her animations extend those instincts into movement, drawing on city pop aesthetics to bring the same textured sensibility into sequences that feel both contemporary and nostalgic.

Her connection to Hahnemühle predates any involvement in fine art print sales. For more than two decades she has used Hahnemühle sketchbooks, sketch papers and Bristol paper for drawing and inking. The Hahnemühle Fine Art Showcase open call, which drew more than 500 entries with 25 artists selected for the Derby exhibition, represents a new kind of encounter with the brand: her work on the wall, printed on paper she already knows from inside the studio.

Jurj is based in Bucharest and will follow the opening remotely.
