For her latest project, freelance graphic artist Fanny Papay created the branding design for Sziget Festival 2020. Sziget is one of the biggest music festivals in Europe which celebrates freedom and equality, calling themselves “the Island of freedom”. Fanny graduated from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design as a graphic designer and his since been nurturing her bold, colourful and 80s influenced aesthetic.
The identity focuses on the varied lineup and many kinds of people who visit the festival. “Sziget is a flow experience and I wanted to reflect that in the creation of the visuals” explains the designer. Sziget Festival is about freedom, acceptance, and diversity; concepts which were very prominent in Fanny’s creative process.
Fanny began the project after receiving a basic brief explaining what the identity design should reflect. There were a few basic concepts in the brief: free love, acceptance and freedom. She started to look for the right form and elements, next sketching and brainstorming what visual elements represented these concepts for her the most. Fanny then paired them with colours that reinforced these feelings, resulting in strong, loud colours that create an emblematic, memorable world. Her process begins with sketches in a booklet, developing into digital pieces on Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and often 3D programmes as well.
“I really love any project that involves music. For me, the most inspirational task is to put the music into visual form in some way” states Fanny. In the future, she hopes to work on as many music projects as possible, be that an album cover or a whole branding project.
