Somerset-based, independent printers, WithPrint, recently teamed up with UK / Canadian design studio Believe in® to create a new super-sustainable 2021 desktop calendar. “A calendar for everyday use” that balances “sophisticated design with an exploration of materials and print processes”, according to Alan Smith, Director of WithPrint, the beautiful desk accessory also demonstrates the possibilities of environmentally-friendly materials and print processes.
The two companies worked with specially selected partners who reflected the environmental ethos and commitment that they wished to promote. The 19 different stocks of paper that were selected for the cards are all part of G.F Smith’s environmental range; foil embellishments courtesy of FoilCo use animal-free materials and all waste foil is fully recyclable; the wrap is a meadow flower seeded paper from Frogmore Paper which can be planted once used; and the Alba base is produced by Smile Plastics from recycled yoghurt pots.
A considered, utilitarian approach was taken with the design, which also has a subtle industrial feel that allows the materials to shine. A different stock has been used for each month, with environmental credentials highlighted along with notable dates and seasonal information on the reverse. The implementation of CoType’s Ambit typeface complements the overall design language, providing a modernist, crafted touch with ‘tabular oldstyle’ numerals. Alongside the calendar, a set of six supporting ‘figure’ cards explore some of the printing services such as duplexing and embossing that WithPrint offer, serving as inspiration for future design and print
projects.
