Kymopoleia is a freelance Designer based in France. During her free time she creates lino prints that draw inspiration from Traditional and Japanese tattoos, and her love for fauna and flora.
The artist first fell in love with linocutting in art school, and continues to develop this technique outside of her working hours; “It gives me a break after spending hours on screens because creating something physical with my hands is very calming”. From here, a real passion has been born.
Tattoo culture is the biggest inspiration for Kymopoleia’s work. Surrounded by very talented artists, thanks to them she has been able to build on this culture which is at the heart of her work. Japanese and traditional tattooing are the base from which she works, thus she creates within the constraints of monochrome. Her designs also include a lot of flowers and vegetation, as well as ornamental decoration.
Each of Kymopoleia’s prints begins as an illustration, often on the iPad so that she can easily work on the black and white tones until she finds the right balance. This design is then transferred to the block, and can take at least a day or so to carve. Nepalese papers tend to be her favourite, which she prints on using a wooden spoon.
Currently, Kymopoleia is working on combining her graphics work with linocut, and is planning a poster project that will mix illustration and typography that she will later engrave. She concludes; “There’s still a lot to explore, and that’s what drives me”.
