Evelyn Polk’s printmaking practice is centred around the found object and shapes, yet also takes inspiration from the excavation and marks left on land through time. Acting like a mediator, Evelyn selects and presents items for the consideration of the viewer. Her working process is dictated by the objects, materials, and shapes she finds, which in-turn informs her journey of creating and the abstraction of forms and shapes. After recently conducting some experiments printing on plywood, the Bury-St-Edmunds-based printmaker decided to have a serious go at producing a collection of mono prints on plywood.
As she predominantly prints on paper, experimenting with plywood has allowed Evelyn to experience her way of working on a new surface. She comments; “Although fairly similar to paper, wood allows some texture and grain to show through the transparency of the ink. The colours change too as they react to the natural colour of wood, another consideration when selecting combinations of colours.”
The final pieces, three in total, all with slight variations sit proudly in her studio waiting to dry. They are bold yet subtle, contemporary but with a hint at modernity. Glimpses of months of printed layers peek through windows, gaps, and transparent inks. Recurring themes of past research into excavation marks left by time are ever-present.
Evelyn concludes; “It’s a slow process, but it works for me. I’ve often thought there must be a quicker way to work in this style but I’ve grown to like the space of time between layers in order to contemplate the next move.”
