Brighton-based freelance graphic designer Dan Smith creates bold, skate-led apparel graphics for one of London’s oldest and most storied skate shops, drawing on half a century of heritage and the resilience embedded in the culture itself.
Slick Willies has been a cornerstone of the London skate scene since the 1970s. Designing apparel graphics for a shop with that kind of history means engaging with something that already carries significant cultural weight, and Dan Smith approached the brief with that awareness. The resulting designs draw on both the heritage of the shop and the persistence that skateboarding demands, referencing London skate culture through details that reward attention: subtle nods to Greenwich Mean Time, and the rosebay willowherb, the so-called Blitz flower that pushes through the cracks of urban surfaces and became a symbol of the city’s capacity to grow through difficulty.
That last reference does a lot of quiet work. Resilience through persistence, growth in unlikely places, the idea that progression comes from returning to something that keeps throwing you, is central to skateboarding’s culture and to the visual language Smith built for the range. The graphics are bold and clean, developed with garment printing firmly in mind: controlled colour palettes, efficient artwork and strong visual impact that translates from concept to printed garment without losing anything in the process.

“Working on skate apparel is always rewarding,” Smith says. “It’s a chance to connect design with the heritage and resilience of skate culture, while creating graphics that live beyond the screen on real products.”
That phrase, live beyond the screen, is the aspiration that runs through work like this, design that only fully exists when it is worn, moving through the world, doing something.

Dan Smith is a freelance graphic designer based in Brighton with more than two decades of experience across print and digital media. His practice is built on a curiosity about how design communicates ideas quickly and clearly.
