Edinburgh illustrator Blythe MacDonald of Little Yellow Scribbles creates a custom gift voucher illustration for Ciccetta’s, Edinburgh’s only 100% gluten-free gelateria, bringing two female-led independent businesses together through a character-led design completed in two weeks.
It started with an Instagram conversation. Blythe MacDonald of Little Yellow Scribbles and Becca of Ciccetta’s had been admiring each other’s work from a distance, and when they finally spoke, a collaboration quickly took shape. The immediate need was practical: Ciccetta’s gift voucher demand was high, and the existing solutions weren’t capturing what made the gelateria special.
MacDonald got to know Becca’s story, the Italian training, the passion for exceptional gluten-free gelato, the ethos behind the Bruntsfield shop, and started thinking about what characters might carry all of that. The result is the Gelato Guys: a pair of illustrations that embody the joy and eagerness of gifting great food to the people you love. Bold, characterful and immediately warm, they sit within Ciccetta’s brand guidelines while adding the kind of storytelling energy that makes a gift voucher worth keeping.
The whole project moved from first conversation to delivered artwork in two weeks.
“We’re just two small businesses starting up, working together to support each other and combine our love of great food and fun storytelling illustrations,” MacDonald says.
The speed was down to clear communication, quick decisions and a printer that kept pace. The printed vouchers went out on uncoated cardstock, giving the illustrations the soft, tactile quality that suited their warmth.
Little Yellow Scribbles is an independent, female-led illustration and design studio based in Leith, Edinburgh, run by Blythe MacDonald. The studio works with local businesses to bring branding and storytelling to life through illustration inspired by personal stories and everyday life.
