Factory Originals publishes a limited edition numbered memoir from former Motörhead PA Dan Hawcroft, pairing raw rock ‘n’ roll storytelling with print design by ZIP Design, a handmade slipcase by W MacCarthy and Sons, GF Smith Colorplan endpapers, commissioned illustrations and over five hours of companion podcast.
Dan Hawcroft spent years as personal assistant to Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead. The stories he has to tell involve drugs, parties, international touring and the unpredictable, chaotic energy of live rock ‘n’ roll at its most unfettered. Wasted Opportunities: Tour Tales and Stories From The Road is the debut publication from Factory Originals, and it treats those stories with the kind of physical and editorial care that the subject richly deserves.

The 276-page casebound limited edition numbered release is produced in four-colour lithographic printing by Identity Print, with head and tail bands, GF Smith Colorplan endpapers and a handmade presentation slipcase by W MacCarthy and Sons using materials from Winter and Company and Foilco. Print design and art direction was handled by Neil Bowen of ZIP Design in London. The result is a tactile, collector’s-grade object that positions the rock memoir as a premium artefact rather than a standard publishing project.

Alongside Dan’s raw, unfiltered storytelling, the book showcases exclusively commissioned artwork from illustrators with direct personal or project-related connections to his career: Joe Tamponi, Shaun Sepr, Joseph Cox and Luis Berger. Unseen photography and touring memorabilia sit alongside richly illustrated concert posters, building a visual archive of road life and its surrounding culture.

Every numbered copy includes a holographic laminate that unlocks access to a companion podcast hosted by Billy Lunn, frontman of The Subways, featuring over five hours of intimate conversations between Billy, Dan and guests from within the pages. The episodes follow the narrative, directing listeners to the audio at specific points in the story.

“At Factory Originals, our work is driven by a commitment to bringing great ideas to life,” says creative director Ben Firth. “Free from the constraints of a mainstream publisher, we had a unique opportunity to create something truly special, an immersive experience for the reader that not only documents Dan’s career in the best possible way but also celebrates the art of creativity, illustration, print design and audio.”

Factory Originals is the multi award-winning creative division of Factory Studios and SIREN, dedicated to bold original storytelling across TV, film, podcasting, publishing and design.
