Adornment as Language: Michelle Gatheca’s ADORNED

posted by People of Print Features June 17, 2026

Nairobi-based photographer and visual artist Michelle Gatheca creates a series of styled portraits centred on sculptural headpieces handcrafted by jewellery artist House of Mutha, reframing adornment as storytelling, personal authority and a form of visual language.

What we place on the head carries weight. Michelle Gatheca’s ADORNED is built on that conviction: that adornment is not excess or decoration but language, capable of communicating identity, memory and presence in ways that other visual choices cannot.

“Adornment isn’t excess, it’s language,” she says. “Each piece speaks to identity, memory, and presence. Through these headpieces, we’re not just styling the body, we’re shaping how it’s seen, held, and remembered.”

The sculptural headpieces at the centre of the series were handcrafted by House of Mutha, a jewellery artist whose collaboration brings a tactile, intentional layer to the images. Each piece feels both sculptural and deeply personal, tying the work back to craftsmanship and the significance of every made detail. The portraits are styled and photographed by Gatheca, with the muse @Kuan17, creating a triangular conversation between maker, photographer and subject in which all three contribute to what is being expressed.

The project reframes styling as a form of storytelling and personal authority: the headpiece not as costume but as a considered act of shaping how presence is perceived. Gatheca’s practice more broadly uses adornment, sculptural elements and minimal compositions to explore identity and self-expression through portraiture. ADORNED is one of its most focused expressions of that thinking.
