Ploterre is a new project by Rebecca J Kaye in which she uses environmental data to create a range of prints. Rebecca’s designs are inspired by the natural world and underpinned by data. This data is then translated into visuals using a combination of mathematics, coding and design. The visuals are then brought to life through traditional printing techniques. The purpose of her work is to unearth a world hidden in spreadsheets and bring this data to life through design.
Rebecca’s most recent print is inspired by a book by Robert McFarlane entitled Landmarks. The book explores the language used across the UK to describe the natural world. A small selection of these words were whittled down and used to produce the artworks. The words cover the alphabet from A to Z, as well as the the UK from Jersey to Shetland. These words were then translated into their unique numerical value, and were used to create the marks that describe the words from the contours of the mountains, to the currents of the sea.
Whilst Rebecca primarily uses screen printing to produce her work, this piece was Risograph printed in order to allow for the textures in the rock to be brought to life in a way that screen printing could not achieve. Allowing the visual to dictate the method of print is Rebecca’s favourite way to work.
