New York-based director, designer and illustrator Daniel Savage publishes Something Savage with Vetro Editions, a book of pen-plotted geometric animations built from bleeding marker lines and layered colour, with each page paired with augmented reality content.
Daniel Savage’s background is in percussion and graphic design, and that combination shows. The work in Something Savage has a drummer’s sense of rhythm: layered, repetitive, building in intensity, governed by strict internal logic while remaining open to the unexpected. Geometric forms accumulate across pages in kaleidoscopic, colour-rich frames, the pen plotter’s mechanical precision offset by the bleed of marker ink into texture and grain.

The process sits deliberately between analogue and digital. Savage uses a pen plotter to draw his compositions, a machine that executes instructions with inhuman consistency but works with physical media: marker pens on paper, producing lines that spread, feather and carry the qualities of handmade marks. The tension between control and what escapes control, between the programmed and the material, gives the book its visual energy.
Inspired by nature, shapes and handmade textures, the colour palette runs through sunset hues and vivid contrasts that create a hypnotic visual rhythm across the publication. Something Savage is as much a meditation on process and restraint as it is a showcase of finished work.

The book goes further than the page. Each spread is paired with augmented reality content, allowing readers to experience the work in motion through their phone, collapsing the boundary between the printed object and the animated practice it comes from.

Daniel Savage is a director, designer and illustrator based in New York, known for his distinctive animations. Vetro Editions is an independent publishing house founded by Luca Bendandi, focused on artists’ books, experimental image-making, augmented reality and the relationship between analogue and digital production.
