Dutch graphic designer Raoul Wilke uses a mini residency at CODA in Apeldoorn to experiment with laser-cut paper stencils for screen printing, producing three intricate posters inspired by the city’s green surroundings in a process that is eco-friendly, highly detailed and faster than traditional photographic emulsion methods.
Screen printing typically involves photographic emulsion, chemicals, darkrooms and exposure units. Raoul Wilke found a different route. During a mini residency at CODA in Apeldoorn, he spent time with their laser cutter designing stencils of increasing intricacy, then used those stencils to screen print directly. No chemicals. No emulsion. Cut, print, done.
The appeal is practical as much as aesthetic. Laser-cut paper stencils are eco-friendly, reusable and capable of a level of fine detail that is difficult to achieve through other means. “I tried to make the most of the laser; it is fast, efficient and super precise,” Wilke says. The three posters he produced during the residency reflect that precision: natural forms drawn from the green surroundings of Apeldoorn, rendered with the kind of intricate line work that only becomes possible when the cutting tool can be pushed to its limits.
The process also left him with a sense of how much further it could go. The detail he achieved felt, he says, like he was just scratching the surface. The laser can hold finer lines, tighter patterns and more complex layering than he had time to fully explore. It is the kind of conclusion that tends to lead to more work.
Raoul Wilke is a graphic designer based in the Netherlands, working under the name Studio Turbo. His practice combines analogue and digital input with a light-hearted visual style built on experimentation and tactility.
