Anna Higgie

Bristol-based artist Anna Higgie divides her time between outdoor projects – murals, festival sets, large installations, and illustration projects of all kinds. Her artworks are inspired by everything around her; “constantly distracted” Anna’s illustrations reflect influences from comic books to fashion mags, and Hieronymus Bosch to Matisse, amongst countless other artists.

After completing a degree in painting at the National Art School in Sydney, the Australian artist came to London where she studied Illustration at the London College of Communication. After completing her studies in 2007, Anna set up as a freelance illustrator, based in Bristol, where she has worked ever since.

Her mural work took off a bit later on; “I started off sign writing and doing decor for friends’ festival stages, and then it grew organically from there, eventually leading to large commercial mural projects in schools, museums, and for companies like Starbucks.”

When creating her illustrations, Anna begins by reading the brief, doing a lot of picture research online, and making digital collages, which she then sketches from to let the ideas unfold. Her paintings, created in her Bristol studio, are usually on board painted using acrylics (often using old paints that are leftover from mural projects). Keen to keep up a hand drawing practice, Anna attends life drawing classes where she usually sticks with soft charcoal, and she also keeps a sketchbook using traditional pencils and inks.

When making murals, Anna creates a digital design first using Procreate on her iPad Pro. From here, she plays with big, flat shapes, creating layers from the background up. She then uses the digital design as a guide and paints the mural freehand to scale. Her paints of choice include trade emulsions from Johnsons and occasionally Dulux.

Anna is about to have a baby, and is hoping to take a temporary step back from commissioned work to explore her own vision and focus more on her print making practice.
