Larna Mewett-Mayer, also known as lunkeymarna, continues to challenge the established norms in the art world, and her latest work, the See the Abuse print series, is no exception. Holding nothing back, the first three prints in this series dive into societal taboos, addressing the often-overlooked historic misogynistic treatment of women in the arts.
Each piece in the series is a three colour screenprint sized at approximately A4 and carefully crafted on heavy cartridge paper. Taking inspiration from a Snellen Chart, lunkeymarna used a 3D, block sans serif font to shed light on the uncomfortable reality of society’s tendency to romanticise and overlook abuse within artistic realms. Within the prints, she fearlessly confronts the intricate narrative where abusers are celebrated as visionaries, and their victims are consigned to forgotten or muse status – a troubling cycle deemed necessary for the artist’s talent to shine through.
Beyond being mere artworks, these prints serve as catalysts for conversation. The limited series prompts viewers to contemplate the often-unseen aspects of our societal fabric, encouraging a dialogue around uncomfortable truths. Each work is a unique exploration of a challenging theme, capturing the essence of impactful art unafraid to confront uncomfortable realities.
Expanding on this thought-provoking series, lunkeymarna introduces the Gill and Poe variations in a distinctive 6×6 card format. Crafted from exquisite hammered white card, these cards go beyond traditional greetings. Tailored for that special friend who stands against bad behaviour, they become a powerful expression of resilience and strength.
Compact, bold, and crafted with care, lunkeymarna’s prints and cards convey messages as robust as the friendships they’re intended for. With each note, recipients are prompted to stand firm against negativity and abuse, making a statement with every exchange.
To acquire lunkeymarna’s prints and cards, you can visit her shop, via Instagram, or visit East Side Print‘s stand at this year’s Press+Play event at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton. Digital variations of these prints are also available in various sizes upon request.
