Haviva Seligson creates multi-media art, focusing mainly on printmaking. She states; “I am an artist at heart. Creation for me is the bread and butter of my soul and it is expressed in many ways such as plastic arts, writing, thinking, travelling etc.” Aside from art, Haviva works as a graphic designer, specialising in branding for small and medium businesses, as well as illustrated content.

She studied Illustration, Animation, and Graphic design at Minshar art academy in Tel Aviv, and graduated in 2007. Since then, Haviva has been working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. She discovered the world of printmaking approximately 8 years ago, and has been obsessed ever since. Her printmaking knowledge is entirely self-taught, and over the years she has participated in several exhibitions throughout Israel, as well as selling her work in various concept shops. This year, she launched her own website that also sells her artworks.

“I approach creating as meditation,” says Haviva. Therefore, she makes a point of finding the right moment in time to create and makes sure there are no interferences during her creative process. When making, she takes the time to translate the image in her mind to the image she wishes to present outside her mind. Translating the image from her mind may take several days (sometimes even weeks). This process may include writing, having meaningful conversations with people, meditation, and guided imagination.

Once the image is clear, Haviva prepares her workspace. The first thing she prepares is the music she wishes to guide her through her creation. “Music has a huge part in my life and in my creating process,” states the printmaker. After making sure her workspace is clear and pleasant, she begins printing by drawing the image on the linoleum block. After transferring the image to the linoleum, she starts carving; “I absolutely love carving… It’s at that point in which I let the mind go to rest and I am at zen.” Once the engraving is complete, Haviva cleans up her workspace for printing, and prints using Cranfield relief ink.

Haviva’s work is a direct glimpse into her spiritual and emotional development, and takes inspiration from the nature that surrounds her and the beauty of life’s little wonders; the beauty of nature, her two sons, and the language of the soul. She describes; “When travelling through life, and living by the power of now, I find myself going through different stages of emotion and realisation. Each of my pieces is a symbol of a different stage in which I have evolved.”

She concludes; “My goal is to find a way to stay in the being of life and less in the doing. My plan is that in time I will be able to support myself and my family with nothing but the art that comes from my soul.”
