Sarah Sumeray is the face behind THIS IS FUN, ISN’T IT, a digital artist taking inspiration from vintage design and old comics. With a detail-focused approach, Sarah makes her work look as convincing and authentic as possible by using aged and distressed effects, halftones, and retro-style illustration, all designed to evoke a feeling of nostalgia. Recently, she collaborated with Cahoots, producing a range of 1940s-style prints that are displayed in their new bar in Borough Market, London.
Telling us more about how the commission came about, Sarah says; “Back in March, I posted some old PSA posters to my Instagram story with the caption ‘what’s a girl gotta do to get hired to make a vintage-inspired public information poster’. A follower who works at the Inception Hospitality Group happened to see it and fast forward a few months, I got to produce these vintage PSA-inspired designs!”
Created exclusively for the new Cahoots Postal Office cocktail bar, the series of brand new posters takes inspiration from original 1940s Public Service Announcement posters and propaganda designs from the era. Sarah comments; “I wanted to go for a playful feel that would fit in well with the theme of Cahoots – a bar designed like a speakeasy bunker in the 40s that houses banned booze for the “scoundrels” of the city to let loose!”
Although the collection was all produced digitally, Sarah spent a lot of time studying 1940s print design to ensure the work would look as believable as possible. The designs were then printed as posters, on merch, and a muralist was brought in to paint one of her designs onto one of the brick walls of the venue.
You can also see three of Sarah’s designs on display at the London Underground-themed Cahoots Ticket Hall in Carnaby Street!
