Tiny Library

posted by Marcroy March 1, 2016

Based primarily upon the ideas of Psychogeography (an approach to geography that emphasizes playfulness and “drifting”) and Up?ya (a Buddhist method of pedagogy translating to ‘expedient means’), Tiny Library will look to create a communicative exchange between creatives to exemplify the social function of creating art and music. By reusing cassette and vinyl carry cases for the purpose of housing and distributing collections of handmade booklets, zines and mix-tapes of varied topics. Tiny Libraries will be posted and placed around Europe, in alternative, sustainable communities, festivals and gallery spaces, to serve as a free social, artistic and cultural exchange for aiding cross-pollination within creative subcultures.

The project has developed a little since then and they look forward to running ‘live briefs’ with independent record labels and musicians from across the globe (the first two labels will be Casa Caos and Tropical Twista Records from Brazil). The live briefs will be an opportunity for designers to produce the limited issue CD and cassette art work.

The initial inspiration was taken from the Buddhist concept of Upãya, meaning skilful means, to utilise the things around you, and by the 1970s publication ‘Alternative London’ by Nicholas Saunders, which acted as a living guide for ‘outsiders’ in urban environments, and was one of the first examples of Self Publishing.
