Covering multiple disciplines including graphic design, art direction, and mural design, Julien Ekiem’s work is rich in variety and forms. From visual identity to publishing, and live painting to textile design, the Lyon-based artist has collaborated with many brands and institutions.

Born in the Parisian suburbs, Julien developed an interest for the image at a very early age and quickly expanded his graphic and visual culture to which he devoted his studies, where he specialised in typography. He began his career as a freelance graphic designer in 2007 and has since worked for creative agencies and various brands.
Parallel to his activity as a designer, Julien has developed a more personal style which adopts a simple visual language based on clean and stylised lines, bold colours, patterns, and repetitive motifs. His works collectively reflect inspirations ranging from cartoons and abstract art, to graphic design and pop culture. Strong graphic universes, dense compositions, and the play of shape and colour, are the connecting components across all of his projects, meaning they can be read as both a teeming whole and autonomous elements.

From his studio, Julien mainly works with acrylics on canvas, and for his design space work he utilises paper, collage, and of course the computer, with the Adobe suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and sometimes even Paint being his programmes of choice. His process sticks to a fairly traditional method: discussion with the client, research, sketching, experimenting, and then finalising. For more personal or artistic projects, he ensures that there is plenty of space for intuition and happy accidents.

A versatile and applied artist, Julien continues to evolve, and is now turning towards a more contemporary and graphic approach, as shown in his latest works. He’s currently working on some new murals, graphic identities, and publications which are soon to be released.
