Living in a rural town in East Ayrshire, Collette Howie is a self-taught artist and printmaker working with linocut and drypoint printmaking. Currently, she shares a studio space in Glasgow in a magnificent old school building in Dornoch street. Here, Collette has access to a huge Gunning etching press and lots of lovely creative people, inspiring her to keep creating.
Collette’s printmaking skills are all self-taught; “I love how I can draw a scene and then bring it to life through printmaking. The process of hand carving each lino plate or scratching a drypoint is meditative and intricate. There are many creative decisions to be made along the way. For example, which colours of ink to use and which paper suits the print best. There are test prints to be done, improvements to be made and the process is back and forth until the final piece is complete and an edition is printed.”
Her print work often involves and reflects where she is from, depicting Scottish landscapes, nature, and animals; “Living in Scotland presents a wealth of inspiration every day. From the wildlife, to the islands and mainland, to the rich history and the role of people in helping shape that history”.
Collette most often prints in small editions, enjoying the process of continually creating new prints. Recently, she has been exploring drypoint etching, experimenting on aluminium and loving the resulting tones she achieves with this material.
