Philadelphia painter, illustrator and public artist Haley Simone Potter distils the joy and energy of live musical performance into vibrant digital prints and acrylic paintings, built from years of sketching friends at band practice.
It started at band practice. Haley Simone Potter spent years sketching friends playing music, watching how bodies move when sound takes over, how a room changes when something clicks. Those sketches evolved, gradually and then more urgently during the pandemic, into the elaborate, colourful compositions she makes today: work that attempts to hold what live music feels like rather than what it looks like.
The visual language Potter has developed is built for that task. Vibrating colour palettes and repetitive shape language carry the sensation of a room full of sound, of rhythm made visible, of the particular electricity that passes between musicians and an audience when a performance is fully alive. Each piece is, as she puts it, “a new challenge, a new experiment, a new love letter.” That accumulative devotion shows. The work does not illustrate concerts so much as inhabit them.
The community angle is as important as the aesthetic one. Potter’s practice grew out of being embedded in the music scene, and that rootedness gives the work its warmth. These are not images made from the outside looking in but from someone who belongs to the spaces she depicts, who knows the people on stage and the people in the crowd. That intimacy is present in the work’s generosity: the celebration of sound that runs through everything she makes feels genuinely shared rather than observed.
